Project 4 - Sense of Place

Artist Statement

What I chose to do for my “sense of place” project is New Year’s. There’s a lot of tradition and nostalgia within this holiday. There are the obvious ones, such as champagne (or apple cider), the countdown, fireworks, and of course, preparing for change. I like New Year’s for the fact that it’s a time for everyone to gather and celebrate another year together. People make goals, and while few actually stick with them, you can feel this energy in the air.

My favorite New Year’s tradition is one that my mother told me my Babushka always says–how you enter the New Year is how you will live the New Year, or rather, how your year will go. Thus, I always cleaned the house and cleared my mind, so I could have a clean home and clear mind for the year.

The photos I took have apple cider bottles, since that’s what we use instead of champagne, as well as a bracelet that says “New Year’s Day,” and a light drawing attempted to look like fireworks.
